It's all Inside
Signmakers are elevating architectural signage to an art form.

A different way of branding. That’s one way Reuven Rahamim, president of Accent Signage Systems (Minneapolis), describes architectural and ADA signage. One look at the signs in this gallery, and you can see what he means: They’re not just functional, they’re imaginative; they have style; they utilize unusual materials.

Done right, architectural signs become part of a building’s experience and act more as functional art than wayfinding placard. Take a look at what designers and fabricators can create when they collaborate on stunning, yet practical, projects.

“If you can sketch it, we can probably fabricate it,” John Souter, Accent Sign System’s director of operations, explained. Case in point: attractive ADA signage. After all, these signs will be seen more than touched, so why not give people something to look at? Hospitals and hotels looking to rebrand, said Reuven Rahamim, Accent’s president, should think about starting with a signage overhaul. “What does bad signage say about you?” he asked.

Accent is also the patent holder for the Raster™ Braille fabrication method, which the company says is spheres that are “precision-machined” for ADA-compliant domes.

It's all Inside

What goes on inside a hospital’s walls is no doubt serious business. But does that mean its signage has to be so stale? Of course not. Accent worked with a client to create this futuristic signage system, (left). As Souter put it, “It has a bit of a Star Trek feel to it.” These ultramodern signs inspire a sense of forward thinking, not to mention attention to detail. And what hospital wouldn’t want their patients thinking that?

It's all Inside

What are people going to look at the most in your building? “The doors, the carpet and the signage,” Rahamim said. Accent worked with a client to make this wayfinding sign (right) accessible regardless of where the user stands. The mirrors that protrude from the pictogram centers let people read the sign even as they approach from the side. It’s colorful, unique and definitely user-friendly.
