how about this. it may be more apt.
go ahead and take my design to every other shop in town. let some other guy who is unscrupulous enough to steal my work and violate federal copyright law under bid me by a few bucks. then let person of said shady ethics do your work and give you what you deserve. low bid work for a design stealing no account client.
folks while i am just joking on that it sure would be fun. i might just have to try something like that.

Ha ha. Wouldn't it be nice if we could actually use something like that. Maybe it would actually make people think about the consequences of stealing other peoples copyrighted work.
You could have the client sign on a drawing as contract regarding specifically copyright for it - before they take it away to 'think about it'. It might slow some of the love 'em & hate 'em clients down. Bottom line - is they either like your work - or they don't. If they ask, tell them that you got in a big stink with a previously great client, who did a bypass. Now you do this signature release so that there is or are no misunderstandings. Then, smile & hand them the pen. If they stall, pull the paper back - and say - 'obviously, you are uncomfortable with this".
you could probably do the copyright disclosure up front......... before you do any design in an initial meeting and weed all those creeps out.
However, the sign design better not look too generic.

This dosn't hardly make me mad anymore! What you going to do anyway-sue um?? Hardly worth the agrivation any more.
We have a line or two on our drawings but most good customers wont steal your art and the others you probably dont want to work for anyway
Here's what mine says, if it helps.
This drawing is original work, carefully prepared for your consideration by Welch Sign Co. Rights to said drawing will remain the property of Welch Sign Company unless transferred in writing. If used in conjunction with sign work done by Welch Sign Company, any charges regarding this work will be waived. However, use of this work by any others for any reason
will be considered copyright infringement in which case the author shall be entitled to seek appropriate compensation.
It doesn't always work, but if I point it out to them, it usually makes them think twice.
