Painting MDF

We have a project that requires us to paint about 1000 CNC cut 1/2" MDF backers - these are used as components for A-Frames and Wall mount signs. The signs are only expected to have a life cycle of about 6 months to a year. They are going in Bars as promotional signage.

Question is what is a good primer and finish coat to use on this product. We are looking for something that is fast drying and relatively inexpensive (I know). The finish coat color would be a semi gloss black.

If anyone has any experience painting MDF I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks in advance,
Jamin
