Which Paint Mixing System?

Hello, I was wandering if I could get some input from those of you who own their own paint mixing system..

I've been planning on purchasing the matthews paint mixing system and contacted a sales rep today about it and had him give me some pricing.

After a couple of emails and a phone conversation he mentiioned the spraylat mark 1 paint system. From what I understood spraylat produces 1shot brand paints which is what I use most of the time.

The big reason for purchasing my own mixing system is ofcourse having the ability to match paints easily and the convenience. Plus I've been getting a lot of requests to use matthews paints from my customers which can get expensive when buying it on a job to job basis.

Now I'm at a delima because I like the 1shot paints, but at the same time would like to be able to provide my customers with what they ask for.

That being said any input on these paints/paint systems would be greatly appreciated. Which do you guys think is a better quality paint and which will last longer? I use mainly sign foam for my signs. Also, any input on how well each is when it comes to matching colors?

Thanks in advance!
Jimmy

Jimmy,

1-Shot is probably the best choice. As far as what you
show the customer the standard is PMS. Pantone systems
are a good way to go.

Thaks for the reply Mark. I went ahead and ordered the Matthews system and should receive it in the next week or two. I will be spraying mostly backgrounds with the paint, but will also be painting letters. There is an addative that can be mixed with the paint so that it can be brushed or rolled.

The one shot itself is a much better paint for letters and I really like it, but the dry time is just intolerable. Another big issue is limits on colors. Don't get me wrong! The one shot colors are great but I get so many different requests for pms color matches, ect... that I had to do something. I've also been getting a lot of requests for the matthews paints too. I actually just had a customer request matthews paints, but wanted me to match one shot colors.

I'll update on my experience with the system, but if anyone else wants to chime in with their thoughts on different paints, mixing systems and their experiences please do so.

Say Jimmy. Tell me about the system you ordered. How
much did you pay for it.

Here is a post from the Hand Letter Forum you
might find of interest.

Just mailed a check today for $1865. The price was actually for the paint. The mixing station didn't cost anything. They actually lease it to you and as long as you continue to use the matthews paints it's yours to keep. No fees or anything on the lease, you just have to buy the paint.

Also, in order to even qualify to receive one of the stations you have to have a paint booth and spray. OSHA regs, plus I guess they figure if you're just brushing then you're not using enough paint for them to fool with it.

I appreciate the link. I hope I don't run in to issues like the guy that posted on the hand letter forum did, but I'm sure I'll have quite a few to share with everyone in time.

I'll keep you updated on how things go for me.
