I have a customer who got a hold of a drawing that says characters and braille are to be stamped. Does anyone know of any requirement that says braille has to be stamped or not? This is a Gov. project so I might need a link to some info. I have never seen or done myself braille stamping..

I imagine you can hot stamp the braille. I've done it by accident, but Is there an ADA requirement that actually calls for it to stammped or not? I couldn't find anything that says that is has to be..

Yes I've been doing them for 13 years, and this is the first dwg that indicates that the characters and braille to be stamped white. I have never stamped the braille dots. they are just for the blind not visually impaired, so why would they have to stamped with color, they cant' see it. all that the feds spec say that the color must contrast with the background 70% and be eggshell.
Oh jeeeez, I understand.....hot stamped the color white...der....no they are not required at all, why would they want to? I think it is a bad spec from an uninformed designer..I bet we both have seen a lot of that in our time. I would ask them, and then send them what information you have, there is absolutly no reason to color the braille.
I have also seen Braille "stamped" or embossed on the reverse side
of thin sheets of aluminum. This may be what is meant. In any case,
it would seldom work for a sign, for a number of reasons. Any
Braille that is embossed from behind for signs need to have a solid
"fill" behiind it, for instance. Also, the characters would also need to
be embossed and filled, and then there would be the whole issue of
how to color the characters (not the Braille) and how to color the
background.

Not seeing the type of sign, or where the sign is to be placed, you client may be refering to ADA complaint signage. ADA Americans with Disabilities Act requires the type of embossed or raised 'dots' to be a certain height, etc. We have been producing ADA signage for the transportation industry for many years. I think it might be a bad spec. But there is a method used that is called the raster method where the braille are little beads and come in several colors. I have used this method and works quite well for ADA signs.

Without seeing the spec. I can't really comment, though that could be a bad spec, there is a method of stamping braille, but the visual characters as well? You might want clarifiication if this was designed by a designer who may not know all the ways braille can be done, oor offer an alternate of whatever process you do.....
