Who thinks that Accent signage charges to much for there raster beads and the braille license? They bumped up the price when they bought the rights from $950 to $1750. There reason was that they give you a book on how to make ADA signage. Is that a good enough reason?

It's hard to argue whether or not they charge too much for the license or not. True, on the surface, it seems like a lot of dough, yet in the grand scheme of things, it can be amortized over the life of various projects. The bottom line is they hold the patent...they're the only game in town (for this type of braille) thus they've got us by the short hairs (God bless America I guess)...so what are you going to do? Pay to play...or get out.
I will comment on their other supplies however. The raster beads themselves seem really spendy. A little while back we received an e-mail asking for our feedback on this subject and made it sound like a new resource for these inserts was being established (claimed to have the same quality and tolerances as the others but MUCH better pricing). I haven't seen/heard of anything yet. Don't know if it was for real or not, but I'm hoping it was as it would be a means of helping our bottom line for each project. Did anybody else get this e-mail? We also wish someone would come up with a different delivery device. High price/marginal quality there too when it comes to the raster pen and auto raster.
Oh well...just my 2 cents...
So invent another way to do braille if you don't want to use their system. 2k is cheap, I cleared that easily on my first job using it. There are plenty of other ways to do braille but it's "Convenient" to use raster braille. I'm suprised it's even 2k, if it were me it would be 5k at least if not more.
I have known Reuven for a long time, and although he knows how to make money, he is scrupulously honest, gives a huge amount of support to his product, and is always working to get Braille signs accepted. He can tell you how to make signs that will NOT fall apart. R and D costs a lot of money, and we all benefit when someone is willing to invest in it.
It will take you longer, and therefore cost you more, to put together some mickey-mouse way of inserting beads, and finding those beads, than it will cost to purchase the license. I assume time is money to you, as it is to me!
As for the pen, it beats pressing the beads in by hand!

Hi Sharon!!!
I was thinking, the cost of a braille bead is 1.1 cents. If a sign has 30 Braille beads then even if they cut the cost in half, that would only be 16 1/2 cents. I think you can save a lot more by cutting time on the manufacturing. If your shop rate is 60 bucks on hour and you can cut the time off a sign by 2 minutes, that seems like a bigger savings than taking the time to find a cheaper and maybe poor replacement to what you already use.
there is another source for the braille balls at a cheaper price,
i recieved a fax a month ago and a company called small balls inc. 651-488-2990 sells the same acrylic balls at a cheaper price, i have used them and they are identical to what accent sells, last time i purchased them they sold for $115.00 1 bottle of 11 thousand clear white, or black.
they also give discounts for volume purchases, this saves me around $30.00 per bottle, every little bit helps. as for the license its self accent has a great thing going.

In the overall scheme of things, it's still pretty cheap. I know the company I worked for had a lot invested in the router/engraver, silkscreen setup, Duxbury with the upgrades and the engraving program. Look at the cost of a Photopolymer set-up and polymer plates. I don't think people are lining up to do braille signs and on average, a small braille sign project of an office building or hospital addition would easily pay for the licensing investment on the first job.
