Tridonic “Greens” the Burj Khalifa

LED chains, fixed-output ballasts, magnetic ballasts, electronic transformers and high-wattage ballasts enable the property to comply with Dubai’s Green Building Code.

Tridonic (Dornbirn, Austria) has contributed various lighting products – LED chains, fixed-output ballasts, magnetic ballasts, electronic transformers and high-wattage ballasts – to the lighting of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The Burj Khalifa, reportedly the world’s tallest building and the tallest freestanding structure (at 2,624.7 ft., or 800 meters, high), comprises a hotel, offices and residential accommodations.

Tridonic’s products enabled the project to comply with Dubai’s Green Building Code. Tridonic’s TALEXXchain P511 and TALEXXconverter have been used for signage throughout the complex, as well as on the viewing platform at the top of the hotel, to ensure reliable, low-maintenance lighting with low energy consumption.

Within the Armani Hotel, low-voltage lighting has been combined with Tridonic Possum transformers, which use 4W instead of the typical 15W required by low-voltage lighting transformers.

In offices and corridors, a range of Tridonic PC fixed-output electronic ballasts have been used. The ballasts feature Intelligent Voltage Guard, which constantly monitors the mains voltage to the control gear for over- or under-voltage protection. The ballasts were supplied to various luminaire manufacturers in the region for incorporation in their fittings.
On the grounds, which cover 27 acres, or 11 hectares, much of the exterior lighting has been fitted with Tridonic magnetic ballasts. These include OGS 250 and OGS 400 large, magnetic ballasts, which control 250W and 400W street lamps for surrounding paths, and for lighting the roads and entrance areas of the building. Lighting in the service area uses EC magnetic ballasts.
