A record store becomes a historic landmark.

When it comes to college classrooms, most people think of hallowed halls or massive lecture rooms, not sitting in a desk under a giant record. But students at Toronto’s Ryerson University will soon attend class under one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, the Sam the Record Man sign.
Though the store recently closed, the city has designated the building on Yonge St. as a “Heritage Site,” meaning the sign will be preserved.
First installed in 1971 by signmakers Sam and Jack Markle, the massive sign cost $16,000. Store owner Sam Sniderman persuaded record labels to help fund it.
Originally highlighted with neon to create a spinning effect, the sign was eventually switched to electronic flashers.
