When speaking to students at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, David Vanden-Eynden, co-principal of NYC-based Calori + Vanden-Eynden Design and a fellow in the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), discussed “Lesson One,” his insights into how signage, wayfinding and branding contribute to the built environment and the quality of life. During his talk, he offered 10 simple, yet challenging, tips for improving work and life that apply to any sign designer or fabricator:
1. Starting is only half of the design process; finishing is the other half.
2. Don’t fall in love with your first idea.
3. Ideas are the one resource of which you have an endless supply.
4. Simple is the best, but it’s really hard.
5. Doubts are OK, but don’t let them get in your way and don’t back down.
6. Have passion.
7. Don’t quit.
8. Just because you can put type in the shape of a fish doesn’t mean you should.
9. If you aren’t having fun, why bother?
10. And, finally, Vanden-Eynden’s secret to success? Work harder than everyone else.
