American designers create a UPS signage program
Lorenc+Yoo Design (Roswell, GA) and Roberts Design (Atlanta) created this reception desk as part of a large UPS program at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Located at the city’s News Plaza Hotel, this project (which included buswraps, wall graphics, uniforms, strategic lighting and interior design) used UPS’ simple color palette to create a warm, clean and sophisticated environment. The designers wanted to provide a calm retreat away from the games without overdoing Chinese architectural and cultural symbols.
The symbols behind the counter, reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy and the motion of Olympic athletes, were CNC-router-cut, ¼-in.-thick medium-density fiberboard. The lighting, by George Nelson Lighting came from Design Within Reach and had to be flown in, because the designers could find nothing comparable in China.
