In June, along with 15 veteran journalists and analysts, I visited HP’s Barcelona, Spain plant, to meet with its digital-print executives, engineers, product developers and marketers. There, HP’s Graphics Solutions Business team displayed new and revised, large-format, digital-print machines. In the process, they asked for our opinions, ideas and suggestions.
Most emphasized was HP’s new, six-color, 1,200-dpi, Designjet L25500, latex-ink printer, which HP offers in 42- and 60-in widths. The L25500, designed for small- and medium-sized sign and digital print shops, prints on self-adhesive vinyl, banner media, film, fabric, paper, mesh and HP latex-ink matched specialty materials. Such media variety allows you to print outdoor and indoor signage, posters, POP signs, bus shelters, vehicle wraps, tradeshow and exhibition graphics, wall murals and more.
With the L25500, you could sign and decorate an entire Best Buy store interior — and its Geek Squad vehicles.
HP’s waterbased, latex inks comply with the EU’s Nordic Swan criteria (v. 4.2). They’re non-flamable and non-combustible, require no special handling or workplace ventilation. The L25500 ink colors are cyan, light cyan, magenta, light magenta, yellow and black.
The L25500 has nozzle-fault detection, user-replaceable (snap in and out) printheads and an automatic, printhead service station, coupled with an automatic nozzle testing system, that eliminates daily, manual maintenance. The printheads, cartridges and some media, are recyclable.
The front-loading, roll-to-roll or roll-to-floor printers occupy minimal space. The 42 in. model lists at $20,000; the 60 in. at $25,000.
HP also revealed its 104 in.-wide, HP Designjet L65500, latex-ink printer that, the company said, will reduce of total impact of printing on the environment.
In Spain, one HP executive said, “We want to disrupt the eco-solvent market.”
For people worrying about the 60" limit set by HP, you can stop now. Remove the core holder ends, and you gain 2" I would only recommend a max of 61", but it just registered 61.3" of print area for the roll I loaded, and it is running great. Remember to create your own roll sizes in programs such as ONYX so you aren't limited by their options. Also, there is an option for narrow substrates. It is not turned on at the factory.
