I’m moving off track this month to remind you that first aid and CPR classes help save lives, thus, I recommend that you, along with anyone you can influence, sign up for such classes, or, if needed, renew your qualifications.
Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death. Once the heart stops, a healthy person may survive up to four minutes without brain damage. Few EMT teams arrive that quickly, therefore, your competence may save the life of a fallen friend.
You can learn first aid and CPR through such online agencies as www.firstaidweb.com, but I advocate hands-on classes taught by expert, local agencies – your local fire department or the American Red Cross, for example. These agencies teach first aid, CPR -- and the use of automated, external-defibrillator (AED) systems. You also get firsthand advice from professionals, including how to respond to injured children.
