Jimmy Buffet entertained thousands of surprised fans recently at LuLu’s restaurant at Homeport Marina in Gulf Shores, AL. Tropical storm Alex had postponed a Gulf Shores charity concert to benefit victims of the BP oil spill, and LuLu’s was left without an act to entertain the large crowds that were expected on June 30 and July 1.
However, the restaurant is owned by Lucy Buffett, Jimmy’s sister. Lucy convinced her brother, to make the impromptu appearance, with his Coral Reefer Band, at her harbor-side restaurant and bar on June 30.
Special accommodations for staging, video, sound and other logistics were made at the last minute. BSUN Media Systems, a full-service audio design, sales and installation provider, was contacted and agreed to help pull off the event.
BSUN Media worked with GoVision, a Daktronics rental partner, to provide the 19 x 33-ft. “GoBigger” mobile LED videoscreen. The massive unit features Daktronics HD-16 LED video technology. GoVision’s technicians worked with BSUN Media to float the 53-ft. trailer-mounted unit on a barge just off the dock and integrated the screen into LuLu’s audio and video systems.
The charity concert, Jimmy Buffett & Friends: Live From the Gulf Coast, finally went off on July 11, a mile down the road, and was simulcast back to LuLu’s on another giant screen. Since GoBigger was already booked, GoVision sent its 9 x 16-ft. “GoBig” unit, also using Daktronics LED video technology.
