Sign designers should borrow from history; they should also know the source.

I’ve loved Art Deco design from childhood. Really. As a kid, my favorite, bicycle-riding parking lot was at Tulsa’s Boston Ave. Methodist Church where Art Deco architecture and a 258-ft.-high landmark tower allowed it to gain National Register and National Landmark listings.

Around the corner was Tulsa’s multispan, 11th St. Bridge with Art Deco guardrails and equally close at hand was the Tulsa Fire Alarm building, perhaps the city’s best Art Deco structure. It incorporates Mayan temple designs and also is on the National Register. To this, add Tulsa’s Mayo Hotel and Pythian buildings, each notable for Art Deco ornamentation.
